How does a pigment suppression skin serum work? What are the best ingredients to reduce pigmentation

Pigmentation is caused by oxidation in the skin. This occurs after sun exposure and can also be hormonal. UVA stimulates your melanocytes to make pigment called melanin. This results in dark spots. Our eyes pick up these dark spots and we consider them a sign of ageing.

You can remove some pigmentation with lasers such as Fraxel or IPL. Some types of pigmentation such as melasma CAN NOT be lasered. Melasma will get worse if you expose it to heat or light based treatments.

To reduce pigment you can use a serum that lightens and brightens the skin. Our RESET Pigment Suppression Serum is a premium skin brightener. Let’s take a look at some of the ingredients in this serum that reduce pigmentation.

Why use Licorice Root Extract to lighten the skin?

Licorice root extract is a powerful suppressor of pigment. Licorice root extract is used in many skin lightening products because it is a tyrosinase inhibitor. It contains Glabridin with inhibits the production of pigmentation. Tyrosinase is what makes pigment. This is why we need tyrosinase inhibitors in skin lightening products. These inhibitors are like a broken key in a lock stopping the tyrosinase production.

Licorice root extract is a gentle skin brightener and a great alternative to harsh chemical lighteners like hydroquinone. Hydroquinone has been used by skin care companies in Asia for years. Hydroquinone is cytotoxic and is banned from use in Australia.

Anti-oxidants – Vitamin C

Our RESET Pigment Suppression Serum contains 4 types of vitamin C. Vitamin C is a potent anti-oxidant and another type of tyrosinase inhibitor. Vitamin C needs to be stabilised so that it will not be effected by the open air. Our main vitamin C ingredient is called BV-OSC vitamin C. It is oil-soulble meaning it penetrates the skins fatty layer for increased efficiency.

Pigment is also the result of free radical damage. When we are exposed to sunlight or pollution we are exposed to free radical damage. These free radicals run around missing an electron (in the skin) they then cause DNA damage. Free radical damage is also what causes cancers. Vitamin C is a potent anti-oxidant and it binds to these free radicals to stabilise them and stop them doing damage. Using a daily Vitamin C serum will reduce pigment caused by free radical damage.

Pigment Suppressing Peptides – Melanostatine 5

Melanostatine 5 is a bio-mimetic peptide that inhibits the production of melanin. Peptides in skin care work by switching on or blocking a cellular activity.

Research in fungi indicates that nonapeptide-1, at a concentration of 200 ug/mL, is capable of fully inhibiting the synthesis of melanin2. Fungi are used in this particular research because they more closely approximate conditions in human cells, but require fewer resources than animal models. Testing in human skin cells grown in the laboratory, Melanostatin DM has been shown to significantly reduce the production of melanin in melanocytes. In most cases, melanostatin can inhibit about 25% of melanin production.

Bearberry Extract

Bearberry extract is made from the leaves of the bearberry shrub. It contains the active ingredient ‘arbutin’. Arbutin is a naturally occurring relative of hydroquinone. As we said earlier hydroquinone is toxic and banned in Australia but it is a potent skin lightener. We would never use hydroquinone in any of our products due to its toxic nature. But Arbutin IS SAFE and a natural alternative to lighten and brighten the skin. Just like the other ingredients we discussed bearberry extract is a tyrosinase inhibitor and prevents the synthesis of melanin (pigment). Bearberry extract has been established as a potent skin brightener and is included in many skin serums.

So that’s just 4 of our ingredients in our RESET Pigment Suppression Serum. A powerful mixture of active ingredients safe enough for daily use to reduce pigment and brighten your skin.
