It’s all About the Pigment Baby

If you haven’t heard this before, allow me to restate it for the millionth time: too much exposure to the sun can cause damage to your skin. There. That’s it. I won’t mention it again. Consider yourself warned.

Unfortunately for many of us, this type of warning has come entirely too late. Many people were blissfully unaware of what our tanning days were doing to us. We have already discussed how the sun can cause wrinkles in the skin. Today, we are going to talk about all of those little brown spots that have appeared on your skin and what a skin lightening serum can do for you.

How do skin lightening serums work?

Lightening serums are also known as “tyrosinase inhibitors”. They work by blocking or sedating the production of melanin in the skin. Melanin is the chemical that is responsible for skin colour.

Lightening serums are designed to lighten the skin and remove aging spots and areas of pigmentation. Over time, the skin becomes brightened, enhancing your natural undertones and leaving you with a bright and clear complexion.

What are the active ingredients in lightening serums?

One of the most popular ingredients in skin lightening serums is licorice root extract. Licorice root extract has been used in Chinese medicine for many years. The main active ingredient found in licorice root extract for skin bleaching is glabridin. Glabridin is a powerful inhibitor of tyrosinase, it works by preventing the activation of pigment production. It is safe to use every day and non-toxic to melanocytes (pigment producing cells).

Melanostatine 5 is a peptide added to skin care to reduce pigmentation. Peptides are amino acids that send messages to cell receptors to block their action. Melanostatine 5 tells the melanocytes to stop producing melanin, thereby reducing pigmentation. This ingredient can also help lighten dark circles under the eyes. Lightening benefits of melanostatine 5 may take 4 weeks to begin. This peptide is safe for every day use and will not damage the skin like hydroquinone.

It is important to note that lightening your skin is a process and your results will not be instantaneous. You must be patient and religious with your regime. Clean your face and neck before you apply the serum. It does not matter if you use the serum first thing in the morning or at night.
